Regina became an IBCLC by accident. She has a Bachelor’s degree in Social Work and a license to teach Health Education in NY State. As a social worker she worked in a homeless shelter and noticed the breastfed children were not as sick. She breastfed her own children 21 years ago for two reasons: One, it is cold in New York in the winter and she didn’t want to get out of bed. Two, her mother had died of breast cancer at age 42 and she had heard that breastfeeding helped decrease breast cancer rates. Regina then had an opportunity to hear Jan Riordan speak on the biology of human breastmilk and was hooked! She found she only wanted to learn more. Regina became certified in 1998, recertified 2008, and is an ILCA/USLCA member. She has had experience working in private setting, corporate setting, and presently in hospital setting. Regina works as an LC in a community of hospitals that delivers 2,000 babies a year. She is the only LC and works three days a week. Last year she saw over 1,500 breastfeeding dyads.

When her local chapter needed a volunteer to participate in USLCA monthly conference calls, no one volunteered so Regina did. She states she has enjoyed the calls and the networking. She loves research and enjoyed researching the New York Perinatal Regulations. Regina feels the IBCLC is underappreciated and overworked. She would like to work on the USLCA BOD to increase respect for the profession, increase membership and cohesiveness of the IBCLC in the United States, and promote the marketing of the IBCLC. She learned valuable tools for conflict
resolution as a social worker in communication skills. She feels listening to the other party is critical and then acting appropriately. One tool she uses is to list the pros and cons, try to compromise, and respect others’ opinions. Strengths she will bring to the board are organizational skills, a love for networking and meeting new people, and a desire to research when she has questions. She has previous board experience with her local ILCA Chapter, committee work, and planning small conferences. She has also worked with March of Dimes grant on teens and breastfeeding.
